Cloudfone Special Edition Review: Affordable, Elegant and Powerful

When Cloudfone launched the Cloudfone Special Edition, we asked ourselves, what is so special about this phone? So Cloudfone sent us a review unit that we can use for two weeks. Here’s our review.

HARDWARE AND DESIGN

Just like we’ve said on our unboxing and first impressions, the Cloudfone Special Edition looks very premium with its chamfered metal sides and brushed metal look of the plastic back. Unfortunately, the phone only comes in black. Good thing, Cloudfone has included special edition phone cases from Disney, Marvel or Star Wars in to the package to give it a different look.

DISPLAY

We find the 5-inch display a little dark and somewhat flushed. It is hard to use under direct sunlight and auto brightness is a little fuzzy. It takes time to respond on when entering into a dark room or vice versa. On the brighter side, you can turn it off and manually adjust the brightness to your own liking.

SOFTWARE AND PERFORMANCE

What lacks into the display makes up for the performance. The Cloudfone Special Edition is powered by Intel’s Atom X3 processor and it is paired with 2GB of RAM. Our gaming experience is superb! We’ve been playing Supercell’s new game, Clash Royale and it never slows down and no lags during the duration of our review. It tends to heat up a little when we play Clash Royale for more than 30 mins. Same thing when we charge the phone.

CAMERA

In order to make the Cloudfone Special Edition be more affordable some sacrifices has to be made. Intead of the larger 13 megapixel camera, Cloudfone opted for an 8 megapixel rear facing camera. Photos taken are generally OK. Autofocus takes about 5 seconds and snapping a photo takes about 2 seconds.

CONNECTIVITY

We just hope that Cloudfone could add LTE connectivity on this one but 3G still works fine. We tested our Globe SIM here and it worked fine. Calls are clear, 3G speeds are within normal range and WiFi works fine.

BATTERY

Battery is just average. If you are a light user, like casual social media check, Spotify for a few minutes and few calls and texts, the battery will last you a full day. But if you are a power user, you’ll be looking for a socket by lunchtime. We managed to get only 6 hours of mixed heavy to moderate use.

VERDICT

The Cloudfone Special Edition is sleek, elegant, powerful and most of all affordable. Gamers will be delighted with its gaming prowess but enjoyment will be short lived because of its shorter than usual battery life. Make sure you have a power bank with you always.
